THINK RED: Family - the heartbeat of life

1. I.                    REVIEW ORANGE:  what is it?
   1. a.      Most simply, it’s the combination of yellow and red.
   2. b.      There are 2 powerful forces in our world that influence people
   3. c.       Yellow = the Church – the Church is called to be the LIGHT to the world, to display God’s presence and glory to our world
   4. d.      Red = families - the heart and life-blood of our culture, everything is built around family, government, taxes, schools, etc.

 

1. II.                  Why care about a strategy?
   1. a.      It’s happening whether you choose it or not
   2. b.      DO NOT confuse doctrine with strategy
   3. c.       Look at Scripture - God does not make mistakes
      1. 1.      We are here in this neighborhood, at this time for a reason – not by accident
   4. d.      Our Basket: VALUES ARE the Word, Spirit and community 

 

1. III.                The Family - God created families to do a couple things:
   1. a.      To bring the HOPE of redemption (freedom and deliverance from our past and brokenness)Model His character
      1. i.        All Biblical families were broken – from the first family on
      2. ii.      All family systems are broken – degree varies
      3. iii.    No perfect family
      4. iv.    Family has a front-row seat to the grace and goodness of God – or not - no better place to see God in action than in families

 

1. b.      REHAB illustration - church has partnered with sicknesses rather than healing

 

1. c.       And to grow us up
   1. i.        Goal is Eph 4:11 - 16 -
   2. ii.      Family keep us honest about where we are
   3. iii.    Family extends the grace we need to grow
   4. iv.    It is best for everyone if families are the place we learn about God
      1. a.      HOURS WE SPEND TOGETHER
      2. v.      Live out the core values we need to grow:
         1. a.      The Word – teaches and instructs us in God’s ways – danger is we can make it say what we want
         2. b.      The Spirit – lives within us, directs us, convicts us, leads us closer to God – danger is we can ignore the still, small voice
         3. c.       The community – bc the Spirit lives within, we can rely on one another – danger is we can walk away and harbor bitterness, conflict, anger
         4. vi.    Family can be biological and spiritual - work the same way on a different scale

 

1. IV.               Community Group
   1. a.      No family is perfect - all families face disappointments
   2. b.      God invites us to stay committed

 

1. V.                 COMMUNION
   1. a.      Let go of expectations
   2. b.      Commit to what God wants
